About this stage

A note from Dr. Rumpa.

The first weeks after a positive test, taken after months or years of treatment, are not the pregnancy described in glossy guides. This journey covers early pregnancy after fertility care at the level of detail a reproductive endocrinologist would give in clinic, in the order the questions actually arrive.

Start at the test. A faint positive pregnancy test line, what counts as real versus an evap or indent, and the trigger-shot trap. Then the first 48 hours: telling your RE you're pregnant, the call, the beta schedule, and what to keep taking. The numbers come next. Beta hCG levels by week sit on impossibly wide ranges, so the trend matters more than any single value. An hCG doubling time calculator gives you the math but not the meaning, the 53 percent threshold replaces the old doubling rule, and beta hCG when to test answers the retest question. Low beta hCG is not a verdict, and beta hCG levels with twins hint but cannot confirm.

Then imaging. When can you do first ultrasound for pregnancy after IVF or IUI, what the sequence of gestational sac, yolk sac, and fetal pole means, and the thresholds that separate too early from loss. Can you hear a heartbeat at 6 weeks, and what fetal pole no heartbeat at 6 weeks actually indicates.

Finally, the lived part. Normal hCG levels in early pregnancy by week, first trimester symptoms, what causes low hCG levels in early pregnancy, pregnancy after infertility anxiety, telling your partner, and when do you graduate from fertility clinic to OB.
