1 postEmbryo Storage Decisions: Frozen Embryos After a Live Birth
Embryo storage decisions after a live birth: continue, transfer, donate, or discard. A doctor-led, evidence-based map of the four options couples weigh.
A note from Dr. Rumpa.
Pregnancy after IVF or IUI does not follow the script the books were written for. The body recovers on the textbook timeline; the mind rarely does. This journey is a doctor-led, evidence-led map of the second trimester, third trimester, birth, and the year after, written for couples who reached this stage the hard way.
Start with the trimester maps. When do second trimester start, what the anatomy scan is actually checking, and when does pregnancy third trimester start, with the red-flag list that warrants a same-day call. For couples with PCOS, the PCOS pregnancy risks chapter covers the roughly 2-fold gestational diabetes risk, the 3 to 4-fold preeclampsia risk, aspirin prophylaxis, and growth monitoring against the 2023 International PCOS Guideline.
Then the birth. Build a one-page template for a birth plan that names your IVF or IUI history, the placenta and growth flags already in your notes, and which preferences are firm. Cesarean rates run higher in IVF singletons; the C-section walkthrough sets honest week-by-week expectations.
Postpartum is its own clinical window. What do you need for postpartum recovery, postpartum recovery after c-section, postpartum anxiety after a hard TTC road, pregnancy after infertility anxiety that resurfaces late, and can you develop PCOS postpartum if the rebound feels louder than before pregnancy. Reconnecting as a couple after years of shared treatment is a separate piece of work.
Finally, the second-baby questions: interpregnancy interval, embryo storage decisions, secondary infertility treatments, when to try for a second baby, and how to tell a child about IVF or donor conception, age by age.
Just the numbers, the protocols, and the decision points.
Keep moving.
